2011 marks the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. There are a range of events taking place at our venues and a new exhibition ’42′ Women of Sierra Leone opening at the International Slavery Museum.

All events and exhibitions are free.

Events

Talks: Christian Aid celebrate International Women’s Day
Christian Aid is hosting a special afternoon of talks to mark International Women’s Day at the International Slavery Museum, in conjunction with the new exhibition ’42’ Women of Sierra Leone.
The programme:
· From 12noon visitors are asked to sign in at the Christian Aid desk on the ground floor of Merseyside Maritime Museum, then enjoy some free time in the museums.
· 2.30pm Refreshments
· 3pm Talks by Lee Karen Stow and Christian Aid spokespeople about some of the challenges and work that they are undertaking with their partners in Sierra Leone.

Talk: Not just Rosa Parks…
A short talk about the lesser known female activists of the Civil Rights movement, including Septima Clarke and Ella Baker. Find out about their vital work behind high profile male-dominated campaigns during the struggle for freedom.

Forced marriage conference 2011
Liverpool’s second forced marriage conference aims to:
· Showcase Liverpool’s achievements on this agenda
· Offer an overview of forced marriage from a broad perspective
· Explore the links between forced marriage and mental health
· Improve regional awareness of the subject and share good practice
Addressed by local, regional, national and international speakers, the conference is open to anyone with an interest in forced marriage, including community members, professionals working with young people and families and the voluntary, community and faith sectors.

We are beautiful – celebrating International Women’s Day
Explore the culture and world of Black hair at this special evening, which starts with a screening of US comedian Chris Rock’s documentary ‘Good Hair’. The film focuses on African American women’s hair, including the styling industry surrounding it, the ‘acceptable’ look of African American women’s hair in society and the effects of both upon African American culture.
After the film screening there will be a talk about Black hair and the care it requires. There will also be an opportunity to network, and drinks and light snacks will be served.

’42′ Women of Sierra Leone
An exhibition of 42 portraits of the women of Sierra Leone, by British photojournalist and writer Lee Karen Stow.
“When I turned 42 in 2008 life expectancy in Sierra Leone was around 42. I realised that I had double the chance of living a long and healthy life in the UK, where life expectancy for women is around 83. I became angry at what is a violation of human rights.
42 aims to show the beauty, spirit, hope and the value to society of women not just in Sierra Leone, but women everywhere, who wake each morning with the belief that one day, life really will get better.” Lee Karen Stow
The exhibition includes photographs taken in summer 2010, which have not been shown before.
