international women's day 2011

Sheffield First Partnership International Women’s Day Event – 8th March 2011

Posted on: 28 February 2011

An informal conversation-based debate on what matters to women in Sheffield

    * Are we represented fairly?
    * How do we make our voice heard?
    * What do we need to do to improve our lot?

Chaired by the BBC’s Trisha Cooper, it will start with a relaxed chat to some women achievers about their lives, work and views. The discussion will then be opened up to the floor. All are welcome.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to stand in someone else’s shoes? Or been so busy that you wished you could clone yourself? In 1971, Californian artist Lynn Hershman Leeson did just that, she hired other people to act in her place and created an alter ego to do the things she wouldn’t have dreamed to do herself. To kick off a discussion on women and life as part of international women’s day, Site Gallery’s new director, Laura Sillars will present two, two-minute artworks by one of the most influential women artists of our times.

“We want to know what is already going on in our city – we suspect quite a lot – what matters to you and what we need to do to improve your voice. We will write up comments from the event on the Sheffield First Partnership website and will record recommendations to be considered by the Sheffield Executive Board as part of their work on strengthening citizen engagement.”
Sharon Squires, Director, Sheffield First Partnership.
