international women's day 2011

Women in Preston who fought for the right to vote will be celebrated at an International Women’s Day event in the city

Posted on: 2 March 2011

The Harris Museum and Art Gallery will host a talk, entitled Votes for Women in Preston, at 3pm on March 8, the centenary of IWD.

The event includes a film about the Suffragettes and how they vandalised the Earl of Derby statue in Miller Park in 1912, after the Earl’s son opposed votes for women.

Curators of the gallery’s costume collection will talk visitors through fashions of the 1890s to 1920s at another event on March 12.

To book a place at either talk, call 01772 905414.

Preston Domestic Violence Service will hold a drop-in day at the Hope Centre in the St John’s Centre, which will include free beauty treatments and refreshments, from 9.30am to 3pm on March 8.

And workshops on topics including eating disorders and domestic violence will be held at Preston Town Hall on March 8 and 9. For details, call 01772 903429.
