Plymouth International Women’s Week – 8 to 12 March 2011

International Women’s Day on 8 March, is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.

8th March

2 – 5pm International Women’s Day Civic Ceremony Launch (by invitation only)
The Lord Mayor, Councillor Mary Aspinall will be hosting the launch event for the Plymouth city’s celebrations of International Women’s Day 2011. The event will feature speeches from highly accomplished and distinguished women from in and around city and officially mark the opening of events planned.

Workshops, writing CVs, interviews and carers advice, a robitics demo, Immersive Theatre Demo and Saftey on the
Web. Sucessful women will speak about their experiences, their work and acheivements.

University of Plymouth in association with the Institute of Directors.
The University of Plymouth in partnership with The Plymouth Ghana Link has made arrangements for a visit from the Erica Kyere, Communications Director of Kuapa Kokoo. Kuapa Kokoo has 45,000 farmer members and many of them produce cocoa for Fair Trade companies including Divine Chocolate, The Co-operative Society and The Body Shop.

Take a Stand!
Everyone is invited to raise awareness and action about issues effecting women internationally.
Where: Roland Levinsky Building, University of Plymouth

These Boots Were Made For Walking: Gertrude Benham 1867-1938
Enjoy a special presentation about an inspirational woman whose achievements should have made her famous. During her lifetime, Gertrude Benham travelled around the world at least seven times and journeyed across Africa four times. She climbed more than 300 mountains and was the first woman to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro.

Try your hand at a variety of fun activities including a giant weaving installation, pom pom making, crochet, knitting, patch work and more in this special International Women’s Week event. A variety of hot and cold drinks will be available. A range of sandwiches and cakes will also be on sale in the café. Admission is free and there is no need to book. Come along for as little or as long as you like. No previous experience necessary
